Overview:

Teen dating violence affects schools, communities, and health. According to the Liz Claiborne Foundation, incidences of teen dating abuse are unexpectedly high: Nearly 1 in 3 teens report experiencing sexual abuse, physical abuse, or threats of physical abuse; nearly 1 in 4 have been victimized through technology and approximately 1 in 2 teens in relationships report being controlled, threatened, or pressured to do things they did not want to do (2009). RYASAP will employ a multidimensional approach to effectively reduce teen dating violence and build healthy teen relationships among teens in Bridgeport. Elements of the MYO (Mine. Yours. Ours. What’s Right in Relationships) initiative include in-school programming at area kindergarten through 8th grade schools (MYO discussion/leadership groups), the delivery of the research based and evaluated Safe Dates curriculum, and events to educate area teens, recruit parent & caregiver support, and create a dialogue with popular culture. The MYO AmeriCorps Program is about personal development, understanding others, and navigating shared spaces. MYO AmeriCorps Members believe that growing up should be healthy, safe, and fun and recognize the power of youth to make positive change in their lives, the lives of their peers, and in the world.
