Training and Consultation
 
 
RYASAP staff is available to conduct a broad range of trainings in the areas of youth development, community organization and development, developmental assets, youth as partners, board development, coalition development, etc. RYASAP also provides consultation and organizational development to agencies seeking to implement an assets based approach to their work and to their communities.
  • The Congregational Assistance Program (cap): Training for faith based outreached teams to provide support & referral with resources for individuals struggling with alcohol, drugs and/or mental health issues. Appropreate for clergy, lay leaders and faith-based outreach workers. Understand addiction and mental health issues, connect with and provide support to individuals with substance abuse, problem gambling and mental health concerns.   • Risk and Protective Factors for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (GLBTQ) Youth: This work shop will explore the factors which place Gay, Lesbian Bisexual Transgender and Questioning (GLBTQ) Youthat risk for use and abuse of alcohol, tobacoo and other drugs, the protective factors which can buffer GLBTQ youth from these behaviors and interventions which can be used to create a safer and healthier enviornment in their communities and school for these youth to grow and learn.   • Asset Based Youth and Community Development: A youth and community development approach based on the work of Jody Kretzmann and John McKnight focusing on the gifts, assets and capacities of young people and the community. Participants will be given grounding in asset development, as well as specific tools to perform youth and community asset mapping, mobilize communities to foster youth development, and provide technical assistance to community groups to implement youth and community development approaches.

  • Developmental Assets: The more developmental assets a young person acquires the less likelihood they will get into trouble and the more likely they are to be positive contributing members of their communities. The Search Institute of Minneapolis, MN has developed a paradigm of 40 developmental assets, which can be utilized to build experiences in young people’s lives to both build and strengthen these assets. Participants will learn the research background of this paradigm, witness examples of where developmental assets have been used to build community and learn new ways to approach problems with youth.

  • Study Circles on Diversity for Youth: This workshop will examine the Study Circle process as a method of exploring difficult and controversial issues, such as race relations, sexual harassment and adolescent sexuality. Participants will experience a study circle dialogue session and develop their own personal action plans to engage youth.

  • Juvenile Justice System Reform: This workshop will explore the history of the juvenile justice system and how it has changed from a rehabilitative system to a punitive system. New methods to have communities take responsibility for their young people like Balanced and Restorative Justice, Reclaiming Futures, Juvenile Review Boards, Teen Courts and others will be evaluated and discussed in terms of their applicability to Connecticut .
